Side-effects of Antibiotics

Sometimes people who are taking antibiotics may experience side-effects which can vary in severity depending on the individual and the type of antibiotic that has been prescribed.

Common side-effects include diarrhoea, feeling or being sick and fungal infections of the digestive tract or vagina. If you are affected by diarrhoea or vomiting, the effectiveness of some contraceptives may be disrupted so you should ask your doctor for advice about using additional forms of contraception.

On rare occasions, some people may be hypersensitive to antibiotics and have an allergic reaction which can affect the skin and other parts of the body.

Important:

  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic before, remember to tell your doctor and if you suspect you may be allergic to your antibiotics stop taking them immediately and consult your doctor
  • It is also important to tell your doctor about any existing health problems you have, or if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking any other kind of medicine (including contraceptive pills, herbal remedies or non-prescription pills)
