Prevention

If you have chronic bronchitis, your lungs are more vulnerable to infections so, unless your doctor advises against it, get a yearly vaccination against flu and ask for your doctor’s advice about antipneumococcal vaccinations.

Sinusitis can trigger breathing problems for those with chronic bronchitis. Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you think you may have sinusitis. Other ways you can prevent exacerbations include:

  • Avoiding contact with people with colds or flu
  • If you smoke, the most important thing you can do is to stop. The more smoke you breathe in, the more it damages your lungs. Ask your doctor to help you stop smoking
  • If you are using anything that produces strong fumes or smoke, including paint, paint remover or varnish, wear a mask over your mouth and nose
  • Take your medicine as prescribed by your doctor
  • Contact your doctor if you are worried you may have an exacerbation of your bronchitis

  • FAQ
  • Q: What else can I do to help my lungs?

A: Exercising regularly can strengthen the muscles that help you breathe, but check with your doctor before exercising and ask him or her for help to create an exercise plan to suit you. An exercise program called pulmonary rehabilitation may help you improve your breathing.
