Respiratory Tract Infection Resource for Patients

Risk Factors

You are more likely to suffer from chronic bronchitis if you:

  • Smoke or live with a smoker. The more smoke you breathe in, the more it damages your lungs. Ask your doctor to help you stop smoking
  • Have low resistance to disease. This can be caused by existing health problems that affect your immune system, including HIV
  • Have acid reflux (gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or heartburn)
  • Are exposed to lung irritants at your place of work, or air pollution
  • Have frequent bacterial infections of the upper respiratory system

You are more likely to suffer from acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB), when symptoms of chronic bronchitis suddenly get worse, if:

  • You have a viral infection, such as a cold or flu, or bacterial infection
  • You are exposed to lung irritants such as smoke, dust, pollens, and fumes
  • Changes in the weather, particularly when it becomes colder
