Community Acquired Pneumonia
Community acquired pneumonia (CAP) refers to a type of pneumonia that infects people who are not in hospital or a nursing home. It is most common among older people, very young children and babies or those with weakened immune systems. It is more common in the winter months in cooler climates.
The bacteria that most commonly causes CAP is Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococci), which is present in over 20 per cent of patients, although it can also be caused by other types of bacteria.
CAP can be very serious and in some cases you may need to be hospitalised. You can find out more by clicking on the links to other parts of this site.
