  • You can prevent infections by remembering to wash your hands regularly, especially before handling food or eating
  • Vaccinations can protect against some types of pneumonia and are sometimes recommended if you have high risk factors . You can discuss this with your doctor
  • Ask your doctor whether you should have a flu vaccination if you are in a high risk group (pneumonia often develops after flu)
  • Look after yourself by adopting a healthy lifestyle – eat well, take plenty of exercise and make sure you have enough sleep. This can help strengthen your immune system
  • If possible, avoid contact with people who have pneumonia or illnesses that might cause pneumonia such as coughs and colds
  • Don’t smoke and try to avoid other people’s ‘second hand’ smoke. Smokers are much more likely to suffer from pneumonia because smoking damages your lungs, making it difficult for your body to fight the bacteria that cause pneumonia. If you need help to stop smoking, your doctor will be able to give you advice
  • Seek help from your doctor if you are dependent on alcohol or intravenous drugs as these can also increase your risk of developing pneumonia
