When to Visit your Doctor
If you think you might have pneumonia it is important to seek advice from your doctor. Pneumonia can be life threatening and those most at risk include young children, those over 65 and people who already have another health problem such as heart disease or a lung condition.
If you have any symptoms of pneumonia or are worried about your health, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible.
What to expect when you visit your doctor
Your doctor will ask you questions about your general health as well as any past health problems you may have had. He or she may also carry out a physical examination which will include listening to your chest with a stethoscope.
Other tests may include:
- A blood test (to check for other conditions)
- A mucus sample
- Your doctor may also refer you to hospital for a chest X-ray
Remember to tell your doctor if you have recently had flu, a cold or any other medical problems, if you drink heavily or if you smoke.
