Respiratory Tract Infection Resource for Patients

Outlook and Prevention

With proper antibiotic treatment, over 90 per cent of cases of acute bacterial sinusitis (ABS) are cured.

However, if you experience repeated episodes your doctor may check for underlying causes such as nasal malformations, or other problems such as allergies. ABS that does not clear after a few months of receiving medical treatment may require surgery.

Tips to prevent sinusitis

  • Avoid contact with people infected with colds or flu and, unless your doctor advises against it, get a yearly vaccination against flu
  • Wash your hands often, especially before meals, to avoid infection
  • Avoid smoke and pollutants
  • Drink plenty of fluids (excluding alcohol)
  • Take decongestants if you have an upper respiratory tract infection (such as a cold)
  • If you think you might have an allergy that affects your sinusitis (for example, hay fever) , try to get it tested and treated as quickly as possible

If you are worried about your symptoms you should visit your doctor who will be able to tell you the best course of treatment).
