Intravenous Avelox is available for use to treat community-acquired pneumonia, complicated skin and skin structure infection, and complicated intra-abdominal infection.

In clinical studies, Avelox demonstrated significantly faster recovery than b-lactam ± macrolide or levofloxacin therapy in hospitalized patients suffering from community-acquired pneumonia. Avelox has an excellent antimicrobial spectrum, including activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae resistant to b-lactam and macrolide antibiotics. Avelox has a dual mechanism of action, 2 mutations are required to confer bacterial resistance, and thus Avelox has a reduced propensity to allow resistance development.

Avelox is convenient. It is dosed once-a-day, and is available in bioequivalent intravenous and oral forms, permitting easy switch therapy. Avelox does not interact with the cytochrome P450 system, and no dose adjustment is needed in patients with renal impairment or mild-to-moderate liver impairment.

Avelox has a well-characterized safety profile, and has been used to treat more than 40 million patients worldwide.
